Common Track Laying Mistakes to Avoid
Not Taking The Right Safety Precautions
Without getting all Mr Health & Safety here… there are some things that are kinda no-brainers. Cutting track with a Dremel without eye protection is something you do at your own risk. If a cutting disk splits during cutting (which cheap ones can do), you don’t want chunks flying straight into your eye. So wear safety glasses. You might look daft, but it’ll mean you can still see your layout!
The same goes when using manual cutters. The risk diminishes here when you’re cutting a long length of track in half. You’re not likely to get tiny pieces flying off. But if you’re trimming just a few millimetres from the end of a section, that tiny offcut could quite easily ping across the room, or up into your eye. So again, please wear safety glasses.
Oh, and back to the Dremel… remember these things generate heat when they cut, so take care when handling freshly cut track. Give it a minute to cool down before you go touching the rail ends.
Cutting Track Without Filing the Ends
Freshly cut rail often has burrs. Always file the ends before fitting fishplates or running trains. This helps prevent poor joints and reduces the risk of wheels catching on rough rail ends. It also means your fishplates will fit too.
Can I Use Wire Cutters Or Side Cutters To Cut Track?
No, please don’t! Speaking from experience here… before I bought a pair of Xuron cutters, I tried cutting Peco Flexi-track with my dad’s wire cutters when I was a kid. Yes, it cut the track, but it left horrible burrs and kinda squashed the rails. That meant the fishplates/track joiners wouldn’t fit, so I had to spend ages filling ends more than I would have done with a proper pair of track cutters.
They’re also not necessarily powerful enough. With some side cutters, you’ll have to put that much pressure on; you kinda lose control of the cutting process, and sometimes the excess force will cause the track to pop out of the sleeper chairs. And once it’s popped out, it never really seems to want to pop back in again properly.
Should I Cut Track Horizontally Or Vertically?
This is a personal preference, but I would hold the cutters perpendicular (at right angles) to the sleepers and cut the rails side to side… cutting the track horizontally. For me, this tends to cause less deformation of the rail profile, meaning less tidying up of burrs, etc.
Cutting vertically tends to squash the top and bottom of the rails together, meaning fishplates don’t want to fit anymore without a lot of fettling, and you’ll often get more noticeable “clunks” as trains pass over the joints.
Pinning Track Too Tightly
Track pins should hold the track in position, not pull it down so hard that the sleepers distort. Over-tight pins can create dips, twists or slight changes in alignment.
Creating Kinks in Curves
The flexible track should form a smooth, flowing curve. Sudden kinks, especially near rail joints, are a common cause of derailments. Use curve templates or spacing gauges to keep the alignment consistent.
Relying Only on Rail Joiners for Power
This is something we’re probably all guilty of. I certainly was in my younger days, and I spent hours crawling around, cleaning tracks and trying to get trains running, where dropper wires would have completely eliminated the problem.
Rail joiners can loosen or tarnish over time. Adding dropper wires improves electrical reliability, especially on larger layouts or layouts where sections may be difficult to access later, which means your trains will (subject to keeping your track clean) run reliably.
Ballasting Too Soon
Do not ballast until the track has been fully tested. Run different locomotives and rolling stock through every route before fixing ballast permanently. Once the ballast is glued down, faults are harder to correct.
Forgetting Clearances
Check platforms, bridges, tunnels, signals and lineside details with your longest coaches and widest locomotives before fixing them in place. This is particularly important on curves, where rolling stock overhang is greater.
